L3 - BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Music - Production & Technology

This course is for students who perform as musicians, and are looking to further their musical studies and experiences in a variety of ways. It offers students the opportunity to gain a wide range of musical skills including:

Performance, Music Theory, Song Writing Techniques, Music Production (Recording and Sequencing), Music Business/ Events Management. Performance and events management are key to your training and typically you will take part in 8-12 live gigs per year in a variety of venues.

This qualification is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels, which means that when you finish the course you may choose to go into full time employment. The natural progression is into the second year of the Extended Diploma. The Extended Diploma is a 'top up' and is equivalent to three A levels.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

    An audition or recorded example of a performance to demonstrate that you have the appropriate level of skill required to succeed on the course. We love to see your creativity!

    As this is a performance-related practical music course, you will be required to supply your own instrument.

    4 x GCSE's at C/4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate / Extended Certificate or above (at merit or above) in a relevant subject.

    You will have gained either English and/or maths at GCSE C/4 or above, or L2 Functional skills in English and/or maths.

  • Course Content


    A highly practical and creatively demanding performance based course which develops professional standard group performance skills (including technical and composition skills) combined with insight into the music and music production industries. It is assessed through practical course work with no exams and includes numerous performance opportunities at various venues both within the college and externally.

  • Progression Next Steps


    On completion of 90 Credit Music pathway most students choose to continue onto the Music or Music Tech. Extended Diploma second year. Some mature students choose to progress onto an HNC, further training or into employment. Students who complete the Extended Diploma Music can progress to Higher Education; many progress onto our in-house HNC Music (Production), while others may win places either at alternative Universities or at specialist institutions to follow degree courses in related areas. However, we also expect that many will use this course as a direct step into a career in the creative industries.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.
