Access to Higher Education Diploma - Media Studies
A focused one-year Access to HE Diploma preparing adults for university study in media. You'll develop academic skills (research, referencing, academic writing, presenting) alongside practical film and television production. The programme builds confidence, study discipline, and a portfolio of assessed work for UCAS applications.
Teaching blends workshops, lectures, and studio/location production. You'll plan, produce, and reflect on work to professional briefs while building the study skills you'll need for degree-level learning.

This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.A satisfactory reference is required from an employer or relevant professional other, in order to further progress the application. This ensures we can support you to achieve, on the right course for your skills and ambitions.
GCSE English grade 4/C or above is required, or you may be asked to complete internal English testing to demonstrate you are at a level to engage with the course fully. If you do not have GCSE English or Maths qualifications, we aim to give you the opportunity to study them alongside the Access course at Kingston College.
Please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure their current and future qualifications comply with the entry requirements of any university to which they intend to progress.

Course Content
You'll undertake three major productions during the course:Short Drama: Script, shoot and edit a narrative short for a defined audience.
Music Video: Develop concept and visual style; direct and deliver a finished promo.
TV Studio Magazine Production: Multi-camera studio operation, gallery roles, and live-to-tape production.
You'll have access to HD/4K cameras, lenses and tripods; location sound kits (shotgun, radio mics, mixers); studio cameras and comms; lighting (LED panels, stands, grip); autocue; edit suites with monitoring and peripherals; PPE and safe-use kit.
Work happens in specialist facilities such as: TV studio with control room, lighting grid and vision mixing; dedicated Mac suites for post-production; seminar rooms for academic skills; booking system for kit; quiet spaces for study and tutorials.

Progression Next Steps
Graduates progress to degrees in Film & Television Production, Journalism, Media/Communication, Film Studies, Marketing, PR and related subjects, or to employment/freelance roles across the creative industries. -

Assessment Details
You will primarily be graded through coursework. You'll complete a mix of essays/reports, research portfolios, presentations, and practical productions. Access units carry Level 3 credits graded Pass/Merit/Distinction; your final profile supports university offers (e.g., total credits with specified Merits/Distinctions). There are no written exams; deadlines and academic integrity standards apply.
