Key Facts

A Level + Journalism Pathway

Are you a keen observer and good communicator? Then a career in Journalism might be for you. This exciting course explores the world of media, supporting the development of skills in research, writing, presenting and production in various settings including TV, radio, magazines as well as other digital media platforms. Alongside studying a full Level 3 BTEC in Creative Media, students will also take an A Level in English.

  • Entry Requirements


    All A Levels require general criteria with a minimum of; 5 x GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including Mathematics and grade 6 in English Language or Literature

  • Course Content


    Level 3 BTEC National Diploma in Creative Media Practice:

    In this first year you will develop a range of theoretical and practical media skills, from film making and the production of a single camera short film, TV studio multi camera work, animation, radio, graphic design, photography, journalism, marketing and social media. You will also learn critical employability skills such as how to write, plan, direct, produce, edit and promote your own film. The course is evidence based; students build up a portfolio of work over the year and submitted at key assessment points.

    AS Level in English:

    In year 2 students have the opportunity to complete the full Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Creative Media as well as the full A Level in English, which is equivalent to four A Level qualifications.

  • Progression Next Steps


    The majority of students progress onto the 'top-up' year to complete a full Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Creative Media Practice and a full A Level in English.

    After completing two years at Level 3 most students progress to universities where they study a wide variety of degrees.

    For those students not wishing to progress to university, comprehensive support is provided to help them find alternatives such as employment or apprenticeships.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

    During your time with us you will have access to a dedicated team of careers and education advisers who will help you as you take the next steps towards achieving your goals.

  • Additional Information


    While some materials and equipment are provided, you will be expected to provide your own headphones, hard drive or USB stick and SD card, which are available to buy as a starter kit at enrolment.

    There will also be a number of trips and visits throughout the course which will incur some costs.
