Certificate in Counselling Skills - Level 2

This course will facilitate the underpinning knowledge, skills and competencies to use counselling skills ethically and safely in a variety of helping roles. The helping role refers to a broad range of helping interactions, which are different from using counselling skills in a professional helping relationship'. This would involve a more in-depth workplace helping relationship and would require a more in-depth level of knowledge and skills, which are not covered on this Level 2 course. At this level, the use of counselling skills involves carrying out a range of helping interactions that may involve alleviating immediate emotional distress, helping others to clarify and prioritise concerns or facilitating access to other appropriate means of support. This qualification is for: • Those starting the first level of training as a professional counsellor • Those who want to learn counselling skills in other professional or helping roles such as care assistant, key worker, HR Officer etc. • Those who want to improve their professional and personal relationships as part of personal development. The course runs on Tuesday evening 6-9pm. Occasionally you will have a 1:1 progress review with your tutor and so will need to come in earlier between 5-6pm.

  • Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course, you must have completed an Introduction to Counselling and participated in a tutor interview. We offer a short, blended learning course that can be completed in 9 weeks to meet this requirement.

  • Course Content

The skills, knowledge and awareness of an effective counsellor are seen as having seven major components; the "Seven Processes" and they will structure your leaning. These are: • Use counselling skills ethically and safely • Establish and sustain the boundaries of the helping role • Work empathically as a helper • Focus on the helpee's needs and concerns • Use self-awareness in helping work • Use a range of counselling skills to facilitate the helping interaction • Use feedback and reflection to enhance counselling skills

  • Progression Next Steps

Successful completion of this course, which includes a completed portfolio of evidence verified by your course tutor, will give you eligibility for entry to Counselling Studies Level 3. (CPCAB) This qualification increases employability for those whose role is to support others in sectors such as health and social care, teaching and learning, advocacy and mediation, support and project work, and other helping roles. It provides additional skills for those already in employment and is likely to lead to increased opportunities for promotion and advancement.

  • Assessment Details

Portfolio A portfolio of self-evidence is required containing the following: Weekly Learning Review (500/600 words) This will evidence students learning and development drawn from their reflections and from processing their feelings and their understanding of theory and group work. The learning review is a valuable tool for helping to achieve criteria or "learning tasks" for the course. Learners must hand in their reviews each week in order for them to be marked and comments fed back in a timely manner.
Triads Learners will also work in groups of three, which in counselling terms are called "triads". The learners will alternate between the role of helper, helpee and observer. The aims of triad work are:

    • To gain experience of being a helper, applying theory, practising skills and continuing personal development.
    • Develop an ability to observe and give constructive feedback to the helper.
    • Experience what it feels like to be a helpee, sharing thoughts and feelings and building trust and rapport with the helper. This course is designed to enable learners to develop the ability to assess and monitor themselves and their peers in terms of the skills learnt and in their personal development. You should schedule around two hours per week of personal study time outside of the normal hours to enhance your own development on the course.
