Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (City & Guilds 5329)

This is a nationally recognised qualification designed to meet the national standards for Teaching Assistants. It is a work-based qualification for those who work with teachers in the classroom, supporting learning in primary, secondary and specialist schools. This is a course that is suitable for those that have completed Level 2 or have some experience within a school setting.

  • Entry Requirements


    Applicants should have approximately one year's experience of working or volunteering in learning support at a primary, secondary or special school. They should also be working or volunteering the equivalent of one to two days per week in a school environment, and have a good standard of English.

  • Course Content


    The course contains eleven mandatory units:

    • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults.
    • Schools as Organisations.
    • Support Learning Activities.
    • Promote children and young people's positive behaviour.
    • Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults.
    • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people.
    • Support assessment for learning.
    • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children's and young people's settings.
    • Support children and young people's health and safety.
    • Understand child and young person development.
    • Understand how to safeguard the well-being of children and young people.

    There are 10 written assignments to complete over the year. In addition, you will be visited at least once whilst working in the school. You will also collect evidence based on their work in schools. These tasks will then build into a portfolio of evidence submitted at the end of the course. There are no formal examinations.

    Alongside the Supporting Teaching and Learning course, you will also complete the Level 2 Award in Safeguarding (Prevent Strategy). This is an additional qualification that will help you understand the personal responsibilities required to keep young people safe, the role and responsibilities of different agencies, the legal context of safeguarding and the national guidelines for recognising and reporting situations where young people may be at risk of harm, abuse and exploitation.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Specialist courses are offered by national organisations, institutes, universities and some Local Authorities for those wanting further training in learning support in such areas as dyslexia, British Sign Language, ADHD and other areas. Foundation Degrees for Teaching Assistants wanting to progress to Initial Teacher Training are also offered in local universities.

    The course is delivered at the Kingston Hall Road campus on a Friday morning, 9:45am - 12:45pm.

  • Course Structure


    The course is delivered by 3 hours course tuition every Friday morning and runs for 36 weeks from September 2024. In addition you are expected to working or volunteering at least 2 days a week in a school setting (Primary, Secondary or Special) and you should have school placement ready to start at the beginning of September.

  • Assessment Details
