What are AAQs?
Alternative Academic qualifications (AAQs) are for students aged 16-19 wishing to undertake a broad study of a specific vocational area. AAQs earn UCAS tariff points for university just like A Levels and BTECs.
These two year courses, equivalent to 3 A Levels, provide interesting and exciting pathways for progression to higher education, an Apprenticeship or a broad range of employment opportunities.
Biomedical Science AAQ Pathway

- AAQ Extended Certificate in Applied Science

Business Analytics and IT AAQ Pathway
Students will study:
- AAQ Extended Certificate in Data Analytics
- AAQ Extended Certificate in IT
- BTEC Extended Certificate in Business or A Level Maths
The AAQ Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A Level:
Grade UCAS Tariff Points
Distinction* 56 (equivalent to A* grade at A Level)
Distinction 48 (equivalent to A grade at A Level)
Merit 32 (equivalent to B grade at A Level)
Pass 16 (equivalent to C grade at A Level)
Please note that not all universities and colleges use the tariff. It is therefore vitally important to check the entry requirements for the course(s) that students are interested in.
AAQs offer a number of advantages over traditional academic routes including:
Engaging and future-focused - providing opportunities for students to learn in real, relatable and practical ways and designed to ensure that they develop critical knowledge and transferable skills to navigate the future.
Accessible and fair for students, balanced with the demands of progression to the next stage of learning - qualifications are attainable for students whilst ensuring that they have a solid foundation of skills and knowledge, and the confidence to progress.
Pathway to university - developed in collaboration with educators and universities to ensure students have the right combination of skills and knowledge for success in higher education. Over 100 letters of support from universities. See UCAS Tariff points overleaf.
Assessment - modular approach with a combination of examination and assignments; Pass, Merit and Distinction grading scale enabling students to receive appropriate recognition for their achievement and a supportive and transparent standards verification model.
Emphasis on Lifelong Learning - can encourage a culture of continuous learning.
