Meet Jemelle Hudson who is studying a Foundation Degree (FdA) in Education & Learning
Why did you choose to enrol/study at Carshalton College?
I chose to enrol at Carshalton College because my colleagues that had previously studied there always spoke highly of the support and guidance that they received throughout their course. The ability to study whilst working was a major contributing factor to choosing Carshalton College.
Why did you choose your particular course?
I chose to study Education and Learning as the qualification which will hopefully allow me to become a teacher. Growing up I did not have many teachers that looked like me and the very few I did have, I feel had the biggest impact on my education. I believe my positive influence on those young people who still lack representation in the classroom can only be enhanced as my role develops.
What was your first impression of the College?
My first impression of the college was that it is a very safe and stimulating learning environment with very helpful staff, whether that be in admissions or security. The library is particularly impressive as the staff are always on hand to support.
What was the most enjoyable aspect of the course?
The most enjoyable aspect of the course has been the openness of the discussions in class, our opinions are varied but I feel that they are all valued and respected. The ability to not only learn from your lecturer but also the other students in your class and their experiences has been an invaluable aspect that I never considered when applying.
How did you find the teaching and level of support from tutors?
I have found that as a student who has not studied for a while, the initial teaching was very much tailored to my level and as I have become more comfortable, the level of teaching has increased alongside it. I constantly feel challenged to push myself with the knowledge that I will be supported also.
How did you manage to fit in the study around your work and family life?
It was not something that I came to terms with straight away, however, the structure of the course and the support from my tutors has allowed me to find a productive yet comfortable work/family/study balance. I do not feel that this would have been possible without that support.
How did the course help you in your workplace setting?
The course has given me the confidence to not only suggest alternative ways of learning for the students but has also allowed me to reflect effectively on decisions I have made and may have to make in the future.
What are your goals/plans for the future or your next study/career options?
My goal is to become a subject teacher in a secondary school, as I feel that representation is paramount to students’ learning. I would also like to become a university lecturer, teaching a similar course to Education and Learning as influencing a further generation of teachers will allow for a wider reach and bigger impact of education.
Do you have any advice for other potential students looking to enrol on your course?
Do not be too hard on yourself if you find it difficult to manage at the beginning, the support is there and we are always encouraged to seek it. You may hit the ground running or you may take longer than others, keep your goals and your ambition as your motivation.

Spend time at the very beginning practising your referencing and research skills, it does make a difference.
