Chessington-based employer DRK Lighting has developed a highly valued employer partnership with Merton College, offering outstanding career support to our Electrical Installation students over many years. Under the guidance of Martin Nott, Head of Production, the company has provided valuable work placements for Level 3 learners, giving them the opportunity to gain first-hand industry experience.
These placements have often led to lasting employment opportunities, with several students progressing from work experience into part-time roles. This year student secured a full-time position with DRK Lighting after impressing the team with his initiative, enthusiasm, and commitment. His journey demonstrates how work placements can open the door to rewarding careers. Joshua said “I love it here” and thanked Merton College for placing him with DRK Lighting.
Darren Roper-Knight MD commented: “Joshua is a wonderful lad with impeccable manners. In the short time (three months) he has been in our employment, we have seen a huge growth in his ability and confidence. He is already a valued member of the DRK team”.
The company’s dedication to nurturing young talent is rooted in the vision of Group CEO Adam Roberts, a former South Thames College student who has always been passionate about 'giving back' to the next generation. Thanks to his leadership, the partnership between DRK Lighting and Merton College continues to flourish.
Beyond work placements, DRK Lighting has gone above and beyond to support our learners. The company recently donated 15 pairs of steel-capped trainers for use in our workshops, ensuring that students are properly equipped for practical training. In addition, the employer has endorsed a Live Brief project for our Level 1 and 2 students, enabling them to engage with real-world challenges and develop their skills in a professional context.
We are proud of our strong and growing relationship with DRK Lighting, their commitment to supporting education, providing opportunities, and inspiring future electricians is a shining example of how industry and education can work hand in hand to build brighter futures.
