South Thames College Group (STCG) has gained White Ribbon accreditation as part of its commitment to making everyone at its colleges feel safe, valued, and respected.
White Ribbon is a UK charity whose aim is to prevent violence against women and girls (VAWG) by addressing its root causes. Organisations receive accreditation for having an ethos that challenges harmful behaviours, and embedds long-term actions promoting gender equality and respectful cultures.
Director of Student Services David Williamson said the charity’s work aligns with STCG’s values and the accreditation reinforces the fact that discrimination, prejudice, or intolerance of any kind have no place at its colleges.
“We are working with White ribbon and our students to ensure there are safe spaces for everyone to express opinions without judgement and opportunities to learn about ways students can intervene safely as active bystanders, if they are witnessing any form of sexual harassment,” he said.
He added that STCG will be re-launching its sexual harassment survey this term as part of the wider discussion on this important issue.”
He said The White Ribbon accreditation quality mark isn’t just about raising awareness, it is also about acting. “We know that there are already lots of men speaking up and showing that there’s no place for sexism in our communities' streets, or workplaces,” he said. “We want even more men and students to join in.”
Head of Student Services, Kingston College, Holly Abdelghafar said: “We have a vibrant student community and are excited to involve our students and staff in future campaigns, tutorial plans and ambassador/champion opportunities as part of this work,” she said.
“We are proud of our association with White Ribbon and all that it stands for.”
