Twelve students and four staff from the Hairdressing department at Kingston College have returned from an extraordinary Turin‑funded study trip to Tokyo, where learning, culture and creativity came together in the most unforgettable way. What began as an educational visit quickly grew into a transformative journey filled with new skills, global friendships, cherry blossoms and experiences that will stay with our students for a lifetime.
From the moment the group arrived, Tokyo offered something remarkable at every turn. Their first day was spent exploring teamLab Planets, an immersive art installation where digital worlds, mirrored spaces and water-filled rooms offered a breathtaking introduction to Japanese creativity. It set the tone for what became an inspiring blend of professional development and cultural discovery.
Over the following days, students were welcomed into some of Japan’s leading salons and training spaces. Guided by industry expert Koudai Fukui, they watched live demonstrations, observed photo shoots, and learned how Japan maintains its reputation for precision, innovation and exceptional client care. As they moved between Seyfert, Takara Belmont, Mizutani Scissors, Socie Group and Panasonic Beauty, students gained insight into world-class standards and specialist techniques. Razor cutting education, Japanese head spa training in Ginza, and hands-on tool demonstrations widened their professional horizons and boosted their confidence.
A standout moment came during their visit to the Imperial Gardens, where the group caught their first glimpse of the season’s early cherry blossoms - a magical highlight.
The trip was not all structured learning. Students also had time to immerse themselves in Tokyo’s vibrant daily life. Some shopped in Shibuya and Takeshita Street, others sampled street food, explored shrines or took in panoramic views from the Sunshine City observatory where Mount Fuji appeared dramatically on the skyline. Later in the trip, the group split for optional enrichment: one experiencing the thrill of DisneySea, the other riding the bullet train towards the Fuji region. These moments of independence and exploration encouraged teamwork, resilience and a growing sense of global curiosity.
One of the most meaningful days was the cultural exchange at Toyo College of Hair Designers. Here, our students worked side by side with their Japanese peers in friendly competitions and joint practical workshops. The warmth of the welcome made a lasting impression on everyone involved.
After the visit, Yuichi Shibairi, Chairman of Toyo Academy, sent a heartfelt message praising the Kingston College students for their motivation, sincerity and professionalism. He shared how deeply the Toyo community valued the exchange and expressed excitement about visiting London in December to continue building the partnership.
The final days of the trip included a return visit to teamLab Borderless during a rainy spell and an excursion to Kamakura, where the group explored ancient temples, the Great Buddha and traditional coastal shrines. These quieter cultural moments helped students reflect on everything they had learned.
This remarkable journey has strengthened our international industry links, enriched our curriculum and given students exposure to global standards in hairdressing and beauty. It also showcased how travel and cultural exchange can broaden personal horizons just as powerfully as technical training.
We extend our warmest thanks to our Japanese hosts, partner organisations and everyone who contributed to making this trip possible. Their hospitality, generosity and enthusiasm ensured our students received an experience they will never forget.
