Merton College students delivered amazing performances in this year’s London Skills Competitions, showcasing exceptional creativity, technical ability and professionalism across Hospitality and Foundation Learning categories.
Hospitality Students Excel in Culinary Challenge
Hospitality students Darcy and Summer represented Merton College in the highly competitive Hospitality category. Competitors were challenged to prepare a three‑course menu designed to test a range of culinary skills, precision and presentation.
The menu included:Grilled English goats' cheese with beetroot, rocket and walnutsTraditional dressed crab and Chocolate mousse with orange and white‑chocolate shards.
Working under strict time constraints and professional standards, both students demonstrated impressive technique and confidence in the kitchen. Their commitment to preparation and presentation reflected the high‑quality training delivered through Merton College’s Hospitality programmes.
Foundation Learning Students Showcase Creativity
Foundation Learning students Mary and Ashwin also took to the competition stage, participating in a creative skills challenge. Their task: to design and construct a decorative flower bed using only the materials and glue provided. With just three hours to plan, assemble and complete their piece, the challenge tested teamwork, problem‑solving and fine‑motor skills.
Both students rose to the occasion, producing thoughtful and visually appealing designs. They were extremely proud of their creations—so much so that each piece was brought back to the classroom, where they are now on display for staff and peers to admire.
A Strong Showing from Merton College
The success of Darcy, Summer, Mary and Ashwin highlights the breadth of talent across Merton College’s vocational programmes and the hard work of both students and teaching teams.
