Two of our Health & Social Care students, Janet and Nerea, have been praised for their hard work by the Head Teacher of London Acorn School, where they are currently undertaking an industry placement.
Head Teacher Deborah Speakman said: "Both students have undertaken a variety of tasks whilst working with us and have been especially helpful with supporting the literacy curriculum. They have heard children read and supported them with their writing. All of our children have really enjoyed working with Nerea and Janet. Janet has spent time working with our school office, helping to organise documentation and prepare curriculum documents. We have been so impressed with Janet's efficiency and quick IT skills. Nerea has also been based within our Kindergarten classes and she has demonstrated such a patient and calm manner while working with very young children, that our staff have really appreciated her assistance. These students have added real value to our organisation, our team, and our children. They are a credit to themselves and their college."
Nerea, who started the industry placement in November last year, said: "As a Health & Social Care student, I had the opportunity of doing my industry work placement at the London Acorn School. Their education approach is fantastic because it allows children to explore their creativity and then reflect it in their learning. I've been volunteering within the kindergarten class, where I've strengthened my problem-solving abilities and learned that children appreciate every bit of support. I've also assisted Year 3 children with reading, writing and maths. I've seen them take my suggestions into consideration and they've come a long way since the beginning. My experience has been fantastic and I've really enjoyed it. Patience and co-operation can help young children along their learning paths and being a part of that has made me proud of everything I accomplish at the school."
Janet started the industry placement in April 2021 and she said: "I have loved working at The London Acorn School as the environment at the school is really uplifting and is not like any other typical school. I got to work with different children to help them with their literacy skills, including children with special needs. The school has really helped me to build my experience working and supporting kids. All of the children and staff at the school have been so lovely and welcoming."
London Acorn School is a pioneering alternative school based in a cottage within 125 acres of National Trust parkland in Morden Park Hall. Their approach limits screen time and emphasises a connection with nature for children aged 3.5-11.
