Merton Adult Learning is delighted to announce it has just been rated “Good” and been awarded a Grade 2 by Ofsted inspectors in its most recent inspection. The provision provides adult learning opportunities for Merton residents and is delivered in partnership between Merton Borough Council, Merton College, and other providers.
Merton Adult Learning courses are commissioned by Merton Council, with the majority delivered by South Thames Colleges Group at Merton College. Around two thirds of learners are on community learning courses, with the remainder on courses leading to qualifications such as ESOL and GCSE and Functional Skills in English and Maths. The community courses on offer cover a wide range of learning opportunities from pottery to computer programming and clothes making to Bookkeeping.
The report stated that:” Learners are taught valuable skills that help increase their self- esteem and play a more active role in the community.” That tutors: “create a positive work ethic among learners” which “helps learners to develop the behaviours they need to go on to study at a higher level or increase their prospects of employment.”
The provision was inspected with two days' notice, and is part of a routine inspection of education funded by the government normally every three to six years. A team of five inspectors over 4 days assessed the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development and leadership and management. Inspectors spent much of their time with students asking them about their experiences.
Merton Adult Education was rated ‘Good’ across all areas. The report stated that: “learners receive a range of advice and guidance that enable them to make the right career and study choices.” It went on to say that: “learners like working quietly and respectfully together in relaxed and calm learning spaces.”
Merton College Principal, Jason Pemberton-Billing, said: “The recent Ofsted inspection of Merton Adult Education was rigorous and probing. As we are the major provider, inspectors spent the majority of their time at Merton College – visiting classes and meeting with students and staff. We are very pleased that inspectors recognised the high quality education offered at the College, which has been serving the local community for many years. From basic English skills through to industry recognised qualifications in childcare, Merton College is able to open up numerous opportunities for residents, and Ofsted saw this in practice.”
