Students in TV studio

Move over The One Show! Creative Media Production students have produced a show-stopping live magazine chat show which would give The One Show producers a run for their money.

Producing a live show is a huge endeavour and extremely collaborative: planning and team work are critical to its success. The students were tasked with producing a show based on a complicated, emotive and red hot topic: the Climate Emergency. As part of the project the students produced and filmed ‘VT Inserts’, or mini films, that went into the live show, interviewed people from Extinction Rebellion and other groups live in studio, as well as creating the graphics and opening sequence for the show.

The students formed 4 groups of 10 with each student having their own role with each group coming together as a full crew. Each group produced their 24 minute live TV show in the state-of-the-art TV Studio at the College’s Creative Industries Centre. Louise Drosdzol, Lecturer – Media, commented: “Having been a Line Producer for a live TV show, the student crews worked to as near a professional standard in studio as is possible. I was really impressed – I would hire them! The course is very practical as there is a focus on getting the students ready for employment or to university to further study in the Creative Industries. The live shows are part of the ongoing assessment process for the students’ final BTEC grade.”

Student Jack Pauley commented: "During the project we learnt so much about communication skills and learning how this type of show is run. As a result of the project, I have been able to narrow down my career path and know now that I would like to be a Production Manager."

Neha Sunda added: "As Director of ‘Changing London’, I've developed my social skills. I have always been intrigued to learn more about what happens backstage in a live show i.e. how the editing occurs. Producing this show, I've gained knowledge on how the vision mixing board works. I've also been very lucky to still keep in contact with the guests on our show who would be willing to be part of my future productions."

Another student commented: “The whole process of working to a live brief was incredibly useful. It gave us an insight into the amount of effort and dedication needed to perform to a professional standard for a live interview. Now I have done it, I feel better prepared for similar challenges in the workplace.”

Another continued: “It was an amazing practical experience and really helped to develop my confidence and skills. The live show helped me to understand what a job in the TV industry could be like and I feel like we all worked brilliantly as part of a team.”
