BTEC Level 4 HNC Engineering for England (Electrical and Electronic Engineering) Part Time (HTQ)

This course can be studied either Part-Time (1 day per week) over 2 years or can be studied Full-Time (2 days per week) over 1 year by combining the 1st and 2nd years of the part-time programme. The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Electrical and Electronics Engineering for England offers students a broad introduction to the study of Electrical and Electronics theories and applications via a mandatory core of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of some sector-specific skills and experience through the specialist units. This effectively builds underpinning core skills while preparing the student for more intense subject specialisation at Level 5. Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace activities. For this Electrical and Electronics Engineering pathway, students take the eight mandatory core units.

  • Introductory Course Info HE


    Awarding body: Students who complete the course successfully will receive a higher national qualification from Pearson.

    Course duration: 2 years (part-time), Part-time course: September 2025 - June 2027. You will be expected to attend one full day per week. Studying part-time means you will study the programme over two years instead of one. This means that you will attend for one full day a week only (Usually this will be on Wednesdays for the 1st Year and Tuesdays for the 2nd Year).

    Work placements: Many of our students come from a range of companies with whom the College has well-established links. Suitable for both apprentices and general students, this course provides development to Level 4, which many companies require for their apprenticeship schemes and general staff training. Please note that you are responsible for any costs incurred in travelling to and from work and the College, and for any accommodation costs.

    Teaching

    You are taught through a combination of lectures and practicals. In addition, you have timetabled meetings with your personal tutor. You will use industry-standard equipment and have access to labs and library facilities throughout your course.

    Independent learning

    When not attending lectures, seminars and other timetabled sessions you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research in the library, preparing coursework assignments and presentations, and preparing for examinations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of excellent facilities, including the library, the Undergraduate Centre, and our computer laboratories.

  • Entry Requirements


    Successful completion of a full BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering, with a minimum of two units with Merit grades, one of which must be a Maths unit, or 48 UCAS points from two appropriate full A Levels one of which must be Maths at a minimum of grade C. As the HNC demands significant analytical skills, all applicants will be required to have a formal interview and complete a diagnostic test to confirm that their Maths base is sufficient to be developed to Level 4. Additionally all students must have Maths and English at GCSE grade C/4 (or Level 2 equivalent).

Suitable applicants will be invited to interview, where they will be required to further demonstrate their suitability for the course by taking a diagnostic test.

  • Course Content


    The Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Engineering offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of some sector-specific skills and experience through the specialist units in each pathway, with the opportunity to pursue a particular interest through the appropriate selection of optional units. This effectively builds underpinning core skills while preparing the student for more intense subject specialisation at Level 5. Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace activities. For the Electrical and Electronic Engineering pathway, students take the eight mandatory core units.

  • Progression Next Steps


    Students who successfully complete this qualification may wish to progress to a Higher National Diploma in Engineering, an undergraduate degree or employment in Engineering, Maintenance-related roles.
