BTEC Level 1 in Travel & Tourism and Hospitality

On this course you will have the opportunity to explore the Travel & Tourism and Hospitality industries as you develop the skills you need to build a successful career including teamwork, innovation and entrepreneurship. This programme is designed for students who do not have GCSE English or Maths, and you will study both of these alongside your Level 1 course.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other. This is to ensure we can support you to be able to achieve well on the course.

    Generally, we require 3 GCSEs at any grade including Maths and English or an Entry-Level 3 qualification. But if you do not have any formal qualifications, let us know and we can assess you to ensure you will be able to achieve well on the course.

  • Course Content


    The course is made up of four core units (Being Organised and Developing a Personal Progression Plan) and three optional units.

    These optional units cover a variety of topics within Tourism and Hospitality, and these will vary from year to year. You will have the opportunity to visit real businesses and to hear from industry experts. You will meet with your personal tutor for group meetings and for one to one meetings on a regular basis.

    During the course you will be supported in developing their English and Mathematics skills and the course provides the opportunity to re-sit both GCSE Mathematics and English.

    You will also have the opportunity to undertake a period of work placement.

  • Progression Next Steps


    The course provides progression routes into work, apprenticeship or further study at level 2. The course will help develop your employability skills including team work, communication and numeracy skills and provide an insight into a variety of topics such as Exploring a Local Tourist Attraction and Creating a Spreadsheet to Solve Problems as well as practical gaming.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

  • Assessment Details


    The course is currently 100% coursework and you will be assessed in a variety of ways, including presentations, role plays and time-limited exercises. GCSE Maths and English are examined externally in the summer exam period.
