Engineering Fitter Apprenticeship Standard - Level 3

This apprenticeship prepares you for a career as an Engineering Fitter, producing or refurbishing complex, high-value components and assemblies such as turbines, cranes, gearboxes and production-line equipment. You will learn to interpret engineering drawings and specifications, plan and carry out work using the correct tools and techniques, and assemble or fit components to precise quality, health and safety standards.

Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to work for an employer, earn a salary and at the same time study to achieve a nationally recognised qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience.

Apprenticeships are flexible and are designed to offer a structured programme of learning to fit around the needs of the individual and the employer.

Learning takes place mainly during the employment through the development of 'on the job' skills, supported by your college based 'off the job training' which will take place at the college typically for one day week. Both the on and off the job elements of the apprenticeship lead to nationally recognised qualifications.

  • Entry Requirements

You must be in suitable employment to do an apprenticeship.

Employers will set their own entry requirements, but it is expected that apprentices will have achieved maths and English GCSEs grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalent.

  • Course Content

You will learn to interpret engineering drawings and specifications, plan work effectively, select and use appropriate tools and equipment, and assemble or fit components to precise quality standards. Depending on your role and employer, you may specialise in mechanical, electrical, electronic, control systems, pipe fitting or instrumentation work.

Fitters work in workshops, manufacturing environments or at customer sites, which may include demanding or hazardous locations. You will build the knowledge to work safely, check and adjust completed work, meet environmental and quality requirements, and prepare equipment and work areas for the next task.

During your apprenticeship you will complete BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering.

    The units will include;

    • Health and Safety in the Engineering Workplace – legislation, risk assessment, safe systems of work.

    • Communication and Teamwork in Engineering – interpreting engineering data, technical reports, workplace communication.

    • Applied Science and Mathematics for Engineering – scientific principles and calculations used in manufacturing.

    • Engineering Principles – mechanical, electrical and materials principles underpinning advanced manufacturing.

    • Delivery of Engineering Processes Safely as a Team (or equivalent project/process unit) – planning and carrying out engineering tasks safely and collaboratively.
  • Progression Next Steps

This standard aligns with the following professional recognition:

    • Institution of Engineering and Technology - IET for Eng Tech

Several of our Engineering Apprentices go on to complete the HNC and HND we offer at Kingston College.

  • Course Structure

The course is split into a number of phases:

Years 1 and 2 - On-programme Training and development takes place during this part of the apprenticeship, with apprentices attending college one day a week with assessment in workplace. During this time, apprentice will complete BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering and begin working on their apprenticeship portfolio.

Employers can also choose to enrol their Apprentices on Level 2 PEO for the first year. This cannot be funded by the apprenticeship levy. Please contact Business@stcg.ac.uk for the up-to-date costs. This course will be delivered over 4 days per week for 1 year.

Years 3 and 4 – Apprentices are in the workplace and will be visited by their college assessor to provide continued support. The apprentices will develop and complete their portfolio and work towards understanding the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected from a competent Engineering Fitter.

End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage that an apprentice goes through to complete their apprenticeship. The apprentice must show their learning to an independent end-point assessor and the overall grade available is distinction, pass or fail.

The apprenticeship duration is a minimum of 42 months plus EPA.

  • Assessment Details

The Engineering Fitter apprenticeship is assessed through end-point assessment at the end of training, once the apprentice has met gateway requirements.

    Assessment methods

    • Project – The apprentice completes a real engineering fitter task at work (for example, making, assembling or refurbishing components to a drawing). They write a short report with evidence and then answer questions from an independent assessor about how and why they did the work.

    • Multiple‑choice test – A 60‑minute written test with around 30 questions on topics like health and safety, materials, fitting and assembly methods, measurement and basic maintenance.

    • Professional discussion – A structured interview where the apprentice talks through their portfolio (logbook, job records, witness statements, etc.) to show they meet all the skills, knowledge and behaviours in the apprenticeship standard.
