GCSE Mathematics will teach you transferable skills which will help you in your other subjects. You will learn how to use problem-solving strategies and to work efficiently by breaking down complex situations into simpler steps. You will be able to explore, identify and interpret mathematical situations and communicate clearly GCSE Maths is an essential qualification for progression onto A Level and many other Level 3 courses. It is also frequently required for university entry in the UK. We offer an intensive, one-year course.

  • Entry Requirements


    At Kingston College, all students aged 16 -18 years of age who have not achieved at least a grade C or a grade 4 in GCSE Maths are required to study maths as part of their programme of study. The decision of whether you study GCSE Maths or Level 1 Maths Functional Skills will depend on the following criteria

    If you have achieved a Grade D / 3 in Maths you will do GCSE Maths. If you have achieved Grade E / 2 or below, you will be enrolled on Functional Skill Level 1

    If you have passed Level 1 Maths Functional Skills you will study GCSE Maths

    If you have studied international qualifications, the decision on whether you study GCSE Maths or Level 1 Maths functional skills will depend on NARIC assessment and a diagnostic test.

  • Course Content


    This is the linear 9-1 GCSE qualification. A linear qualification means that students must sit all their exams at the end of the course in June. The qualification can be taken at either Foundation Tier or Higher Tier.

    This is an intensive course requiring full commitment and attendance.

    Algebra

    Ratio, proportion and rates of change

    Geometry and measures

    Probability

    Statistics

  • Progression Next Steps


    This is an essential subject for progression to A Levels and Level 3 BTEC qualifications. Many universities and employers require that you have at least a C / 4 in this subject. If you are considering doing Mathematics A-Level then you will be expected to achieve Grade 6 in the GCSE.

    The exam board is Pearson. The specification is Maths 1MA1

    You will need to buy your own calculator and geometry set.

  • Assessment Details


    The course is assessed by three written exams, each worth a third of the final grade. Paper 1 is a non-calculator assessment and a calculator is allowed for Paper 2 and Paper 3.
