Engineering Maintenance Technician - Single Discipline – Level 3

Engineering maintenance technicians work in a range of industries that use plant, equipment and systems. This includes energy, leisure entertainment, manufacturing, processing, and utilities companies. The working environments vary across the industries.

Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to work for an employer, earn a salary and at the same time study to achieve a nationally recognised qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience.

Apprenticeships are flexible and are designed to offer a structured programme of learning to fit around the needs of the individual and the employer.

Learning takes place mainly during the employment through the development of 'on the job' skills, supported by your College based 'off the job training' which will take place at the college typically for one day every other week. Both the on and off the job elements of the apprenticeship lead to nationally-recognised qualifications.

  • Entry Requirements


    You must be in suitable employment to do an apprenticeship. Employers will set their own entry requirements, but it is expected that apprentices will have achieved maths and English GCSEs grades 9-4/A*-C or equivalent.

  • Course Content


    The Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician – Single Discipline Apprenticeship prepares apprentices to maintain, diagnose, and repair engineering systems across a wide range of industries including energy, leisure and entertainment, manufacturing, processing, and utilities.

    This apprenticeship is a core and options programme. Apprentices complete the core learning, then specialise in one option. Options

    • Electrical Engineering Maintenance Technician.
    • Control and Instrumentation Engineering Maintenance Technician.
    • Mechanical Engineering Maintenance Technician.

    What apprentices do Engineering maintenance technicians help keep plant, equipment and systems running safely and efficiently. They carry out planned and preventative maintenance to reduce the chance of problems, and reactive maintenance when faults or breakdowns happen. They also prepare for jobs, work safely to the required standard, close tasks properly, keep records up to date, and contribute to continuous improvement. Specialisms

    • Electrical Engineering Maintenance Technician: focuses on the electrical aspects of plant, equipment and systems, such as motors, power supplies, and low- or high-voltage distribution.
    • Control and Instrumentation Engineering Maintenance Technician: focuses on control and instrumentation systems, such as programmable logic controllers, flow meters, heat exchangers and safety controls.
    • Mechanical Engineering Maintenance Technician: focuses on mechanical systems, such as actuators, fans, pumps, valves, gearboxes and pipework.

  • Course Structure


    The course is split into a number of phases: On-programme Training and development takes place during this part of the apprenticeship, with apprentices attending college one day a week for the first 2 years, plus assessment in the workplace. During this time, you will develop a portfolio. During their training, apprentices will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected from a competent Engineering Maintenance Technician.

    End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage that an apprentice goes through to complete their apprenticeship. The apprentice must show their learning to an independent end-point assessor and the overall grade available is distinction, pass or fail.

    The apprenticeship duration is a minimum of 42 months plus EPA. Up to one day a week at college, for with a minimum four days per week employed in suitable employment.

  • Assessment Details


    The EMT single discipline apprenticeship is assessed through end-point assessment at the end of training, once the apprentice has met gateway requirements. It uses a minimum of three assessment methods: an observation with questions, an interview and portfolio of evidence, and a multiple-choice test. Assessment methods

    • Observation with questions: the apprentice is observed doing normal day-to-day work, usually for at least four hours, and the assessor asks at least four questions.
    • Interview and portfolio of evidence: the apprentice takes part in an interview, answers at least nine questions based on the portfolio and occupation.
    • Multiple-choice test: this checks knowledge across the standard
