Entry Requirements

If you are 19 or over our GCSE and Functional Skills courses can help you develop your skills, grow in confidence and achieve your goals.

The courses are available across all levels so you will be able to study at the level best suited to you. If you have applied to study GCSE with us, depending on your assessment, we may recommend you study Functional Skills first.

Functional Skills are suitable for fluent English speakers, practical for work and life and they are a gateway to employment and some Access and HE courses.

GCSE are suitable for fluent English speakers who are working at Level 2. They are an intensive traditional UK school qualification, and are a gateway to employment and Access and HE courses.

You will work towards the Edexcel Functional Skills, Edexcel GCSE English or the AQA GCSE maths qualifications.

Before you Enrol

Before you enrol, you will need to take an assessment with one of our tutors to help us determine your current level of knowledge and skill.

If you have already completed a Functional Skill qualification or a GCSE with a grade below 4 or a D, please bring along your certificates when you come for your assessment.

These courses are fully funded by the government so they are free of charge.

When and where can I study?

Courses are run at our Wandsworth Campus and Tooting Centre. We have courses in the morning, afternoons and evenings.

Information Sheet - Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA)

Thank you for your interest in our CELTA programme. In 2024/25 we will run three courses; dates are at the bottom of the sheet.

The CELTA award is an internationally recognised professional qualification for people looking to teach English to adults either in the UK or abroad. The course is very practical and provides candidates with the opportunity to teach students at a range of levels whilst also observing the practice of others. This practical work is underpinned by theory sessions which look to develop knowledge of the technical aspects of the English language whilst also building understanding of the principles of effective teaching.

Our CELTA team is very experienced, success rates for the programme are extremely high and we provide access to ‘state of the art’ teaching facilities, including: spacious classrooms, smart boards and a dedicated virtual learning environment. We have links with language schools both domestically and across the globe. Consequently, many of our students progress directly onto employment as English language teachers. As part of the course you will also complete an NCFE Level 2 certificate in Equality and Diversity. This is a nationally recognised qualification, which is attractive to future employers.

Assessment will involve four written assignments of roughly 1000 words each in length. Candidates will also be required to complete six hours of assessed teaching practice. Great care is taken to provide structured 1:1 support and feedback throughout this practice.

From September 2024 fees are scheduled to be £1550. You may be eligible for the Advanced Learner Loan, which covers £811 of the fee. You should also budget around £50 for books and materials.

Next Step

If you would like to pursue your interest, please email us at celta.wandsworth@stcg.ac.uk. We will then invite you in to give you the opportunity to discuss the programme in more detail with members of the CELTA team, show you the facilities available at the college and allow you to complete the initial assessment. We look forward to meeting you.

"Kingston College has undoubtedly untangled and provided direction for my professional life and career path. In early 2019, I was an A Level drop out and had no further education qualifications. I am so glad I transitioned to BTECs as I felt A Levels involved a lot of reciting of textbooks to gain marks in a test, whereas BTECs have taught me way more content relating to real life and workplace scenarios and I have far more enjoyed learning the content.”
