L4 BTEC HNC in Digital Technologies - Artificial Intelligence Solutions and Applications

This exciting one-year blended learning course (face-to-face and online classes) will give you a broad introduction to digital technologies combined with some specific, industry relevant specialist options. You will gain sound knowledge of the basic concepts of digital technology. Along with practical skills and theoretical knowledge, you will also develop a wide range of transferable skills, such as communication, teamwork, research and analysis, which are highly valued in higher education and the workplace.

The specialist focus of the course is the Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Intelligent Systems – including data gathering, validation and processing. You will be introduced to the science behind machine learning and explore themes around the future of AI to solve real-world problems. You will investigate different AI types and their applications and develop skills to be able to evaluate the technical and ethical challenges and opportunities around AI.

The course has been designed with the input of employers who were involved in every stage of designing the programme. The course is designed to give students the necessary skills to further their studies with a level 5 and beyond into university or enter employment.

The course is Thursday evenings at South Thames College, Wandsworth (6-9pm) and Saturday mornings online (9.30-1.30pm).

  • Entry Requirements


    You will have some of the following (or equivalent):

    • Either a BTEC level 3 qualification in Computing, Business or Creative Digital Media Production
    • or one strong A level in a relevant subject or more than one A level at adequate performance
    • or other related level 3 qualifications
    • or an Access to Higher Education Diploma
    • and/or relevant work experience
    • plus English and maths at GCSE (grades A*-C or 9-4)
  • Course Content


    You will study a total of 8 mandatory and specialist units at level 4, each worth 15 credits. These include:

    • Innovation & Digital Transformation (K/618/5691)
    • Cyber Security (M/618/5661)
    • Programming (H/618/7388)
    • Big Data & Visualisation (J/618/6251)
    • Cloud Fundamentals (T/618/4883)
    • Software Development Lifecycles (K/618/7408 )
    • Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI) & Intelligent Systems (K/618/5660)

    Each unit requires about 60 hours of teaching time, plus a further 90 hours of independent learning hours.

  • Progression Next Steps


    After you achieve the level 4, you can go on to take the qualification to level 5 and gain an Higher National Diploma (HND), or into employment. The level 5 HND linked to this course is recognised by Universities and meet the entry requirements for many relevant digital technology courses.

  • Assessment Details


    You will need to complete an assignment after each unit. Assignments will include practical and written elements. Assignments can be divided into separate sections and may require several forms of evidence to achieve them.
