Introductory Clothes Making Skills

Clothes making is a great skill to have if you're interested in working in fashion or going on to do a higher level fashion course. This practical introductory course is suitable for beginners and will teach you the basic professional techniques of clothes making.

Students will be required to purchase a commercial pattern, fabric and essential sewing equipment. Please bring scissors, a hand needle, pen and pencil, a ruler, a blue tailors chalk, dressmaking pins and 0.25m of cotton fabric to the first session.

If you are on a low wage, unemployed or claim Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) then you can enrol on the course for free.

  • Course Content


    By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

    • Thread and use a sewing machine and overlocker

    • Choose appropriate fabrics

    • Use a commercial pattern to make a pair of drawstring or elastic waist trousers or skirt. Alternative patterns may be possible with the agreement of the tutor.

    • Use a tailors dummy.

    There will be individual and group tuition, with teacher led discussions and demonstrations.
