L3 Technical Occupational Entry for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator)

The aim of this qualification is to prepare learners to become early years educators, enabling them to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years.

Upon achievement of this qualification, it is intended that learners will be able to enter the workforce as early years educators.

You will be required to be working or have a voluntary placement for a minimum of 300 hours but with a recommendation of 350 hours which will give you the experience you need to complete this course

This course is funded under the government Free job offers so there will be no cost to you if you meet the criteria

  • Course Content


    The course consists of 10 Mandatory units that must all be completed to achieve this qualification.

    • 1 Introduction to the role of the early years educator
    • 2 Holistic child development
    • 3 Children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)
    • 4 Effective communication in an early years setting
    • 5 Safeguarding and welfare requirements
    • 6 Health, wellbeing and safety
    • 7 Promoting an effective early years curriculum
    • 8 Assessment of children's learning and development
    • 9 Understanding play for holistic development and learning
    • 10 Partnership working

    Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to the following employment:

    • Educator in day nurseries
    • Educator in nursery schools
    • Educator in reception classes in primary schools
    • Pre-school worker
    • Further education - NCFE CACHE Level 5 Diploma for the Early Years Senior Practitioner •
  • Course Structure


    This qualification aims to:

    • focus on the study of early years education

    • offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge

    • provide opportunities to acquire a number of practical and technical skills

    The objectives of this qualification are to:

    • confirm occupational competence and/or 'licence to practice'

    • confirm competence in an occupational role to the standard required
  • Assessment Details


    Skills based outcomes must be achieved with in a real work environment. This will be a direct observation within the workplace by a qualified assessor .

    All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. Assessment methods will include

    • direct observation of learner in work placement/employment
    • professional discussions
    • reflective accounts
    • work products, for example, policies, reports and records that can be used to underpin knowledge.

    Placements are required for achievement of this qualification. A minimum of 300 placement hours is required. During placement, learners will need support from a professional within the real work environment who will be required to complete professional development records.
