About the tutor: Richard Lawrence read music at Oxford. He started this 'Enjoying Opera' course at South Thames College in 1997. He has lectured abroad for Saga Holidays and Martin Randall, and for nearly 20 years has been a regular contributor to 'Gramophone' magazine.

Opera from the Russian steppes
After decades of foreign domination, music in Russia found its voice in the 19th century. We will study operas by Tchaikovsky and his nationalist contemporaries such as Mussorgsky and Borodin, finishing with operas by Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Topics covered will include the effects of nationalism and the influence of the West on the rise of Russian opera. There will be detailed illustrations on DVD, CD and piano.
