Guitar Playing Skills

This course is designed for beginners and improvers who want to build a strong foundation in core guitar techniques. Whether you're picking up the guitar for the first time or looking to refresh your skills, this course will help you develop confidence and musical understanding.

You will learn and improve the fundamentals of guitar playing, including essential chords, strumming techniques, scales, and rhythm patterns, while working on songs of your choice. Lessons will focus on developing good technique and musical awareness through individual practice, with one-to-one guidance from your tutor.

Throughout the course, you'll explore a range of music styles (including pop, rock, folk, and blues) and gain the skills to play complete songs with confidence and expression.

    No formal qualifications are required.

  • Course Content


    By the end of the course you will be able to:

    *Reading and Understanding Music Notation, including guitar tablature and chord diagrams for effective learning and performance.

    *Strumming Techniques. Developing rhythmic accuracy through a variety of time signatures (4/4, 3/4, 6/8) and styles, including shuffle and swing patterns.

    *Chord Vocabulary. Mastering open chords, barre chords, and extended chord shapes to expand harmonic understanding.

    *Fingerpicking Skills. Exploring linear and alternating picking patterns to enhance texture and melodic accompaniment.

    *Song Repertoire. Learning and performing songs that incorporate core guitar techniques, reinforcing skills through practical application.

  • Additional Information


    Materials Please bring your own guitar, tuner, capo, plectrums, pen& paper. If using an electric guitar please bring battery-powered amp & lead. We are sorry but for safely reasons mains operated amps cannot be used. If you are on a low wage, unemployed or claim Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) then you can have a reduction.

  • Course Structure


    This 9-week Guitar Course takes place each Monday, guiding learners step by step from foundational techniques to confident song performance. Each week builds on the previous one, blending practical exercises, music theory, and repertoire development.

  • Assessment Details


    Tuition will be both group & one to one. Students will be advised how best to improve their technique. Assessment Details:

    *Continuous assessment through weekly exercises and song assignments

    *Final performance demonstrating mastery of core techniques

    *Feedback on strengths, areas for improvement, and progression tips.
