Clothes Making and Pattern Cutting for Beginners and Improvers

In this course, we will start by learning how to use measurements to plot and draft a fitted bodice and a trouser block. Whether you are already working in the industry, hoping to pursue academic study, or are a home dressmaker seeking to improve your skill set, this course will help you develop practical skills in garment design and construction.

What will you gain? Beginners: Learn to take measurements correctly. Produce a basic block. Be introduced to techniques through group demonstrations, and benefit from one to one tutorials to aid your development. Be able to create a pattern from a block with the correct seam allowance and markings.

More advance learners will start individual projects: Draft the skirt (trouser) block, production of skirt toile, fitting and modification of pattern. Dress block, production of dress toile, fitting and modification of pattern if required. *Completion of outstanding elements from previous course for returning learners .

  • Entry Requirements

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills? Intermediate to advance. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, handouts, and health and safety information. *You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

  • Course Content

What will we cover? Body measuring, sizing and ease. How to read patterns, the step by step process of block making.

By the end of this course, beginner students will be able to... Implement how to take body measurements correctly. Create a fitted bodice and a trouser block. Identify basic pattern cutting symbols. Demonstrate competency in using tools and equipment.

Students should bring along drawings/photos/sketches of the garment they would like to create. The basic pattern blocks can then be adapted to reflect the design idea and students will work at their own pace to draft a pattern, produce a toile (if needed) and then to create the finished garment.
