Pilates

This course is suitable for adults who would like to improve their strength, flexibility, mobility, balance and posture through Pilates. Pilates is a gentle, low-impact form of exercise that can be adapted to suit different fitness levels and abilities.

You will learn a range of Pilates exercises and develop your understanding of safe and effective movement, breathing, posture and alignment. The course provides a supportive environment where you can work at a comfortable level and gradually develop your skills and confidence.

  • Entry Requirements


    No formal qualifications or previous Pilates experience are required.

    You should have an interest in improving your fitness, mobility and general wellbeing and be comfortable taking part in mat-based exercises.

    You should be able to safely get down to and up from the floor independently. If you have a medical condition, injury or disability that may affect your ability to participate, please seek appropriate medical advice and discuss any adjustments with the tutor.

  • Course Content


    By the end of the course, you should have increased your knowledge and understanding of Pilates and be able to perform a range of exercises with greater awareness of posture, alignment, breathing and controlled movement.

    During the course you will:

    *Learn and practise the fundamental principles of Pilates.

    *Develop exercises to improve core strength, stability and muscle control.

    *Work on flexibility, mobility and balance.

    *Develop awareness of posture and body alignment.

    *Explore breathing techniques and how they support Pilates exercises.

    *Learn how to perform exercises safely and effectively.

    *Build on your skills through appropriate progressions and modifications.

    *Develop exercises that can support everyday functional movement.

  • Progression Next Steps


    On successful completion of the course, you may wish to continue developing your Pilates practice by enrolling on a further Pilates course at South Thames College.

  • Additional Information


    The course is delivered face-to-face at Wandsworth.

    Please wear comfortable, loose or form-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. Exercises can be performed in socks or bare feet.

    Mats and head blocks are available for use, although you may prefer to bring your own equipment. Bringing a towel is also recommended.

    For safety and comfort, please inform the tutor of any relevant injuries, medical conditions or mobility requirements at the beginning of the course so that suitable modifications can be considered.

  • Course Structure


    The course consists of nine one-hour, face-to-face sessions at Wandsworth.

    Each session will combine practical exercises with tutor demonstrations, guidance and feedback. Exercises will gradually develop throughout the course, allowing you to build confidence, strength, mobility and control.

    The tutor will provide modifications and progressions where appropriate so that exercises can be adapted to individual needs and abilities.

  • Assessment Details


    There is no formal examination or written assessment.

    Your progress will be supported through practical activities, tutor observation, demonstrations and ongoing verbal feedback. The tutor will provide guidance and corrections throughout the sessions and will help you to develop safe and effective movement patterns.
