Community Interpreting -  Level 3: Part 2

Please note that this course is delivered online. This nationally recognised qualification (OCN, Open College Network) is for people who are fluent in English and another language. Students will have the opportunity to learn and develop the skills and knowledge needed to work as a community interpreter including the role of the interpreter, professional conduct and codes of practice and knowledge of the sectors within which they will be working - Housing, Health, Education, Interpreting courses are accredited, it is not possible to simply enrol on the course. You must attend an initial assessment session before you enrol in any of the Community Interpreting Level 3 Part 1 courses. This course admits concessions

  • Entry Requirements


    You must be 18 over Be able to use the 4 skills fluently English Entry Level 3 or above Be able to read, write and speak fluently in your community language, most students are native speakers of this. The community languages accepted are Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Farsi, French, Greek, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Nepalese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Turkish, Urdu, Romanian, Somali,. Be able to use WORD to write your assessments Be able to send an email with a WORD attachment

    You cannot enrol directly on this course. all students-independently of their background and studies- must attend an Initial Assessment and Induction session before you enrol in any of the Community Interpreting 1 - Level 3 courses. please check our website and enrol in any of the Induction-Assessment sessions. the link below will take you to the interpreting assessment sessions available please note your enrolment will not be complete until you have confirmation from Student Services (either by phone or email) if your enrolment is not complete 48 hours before the session takes place, unfortunately, you will not be invited

    After successfully completing the Preparing for Community Interpreting course you can progress onto Community Interpreting Level 3 and gain the Units you need to go into work as an interpreter.

    Community Interpreting Level 3 1-How do I get the qualification? You have to complete both the Community Interpreting Part 1 and part 2 in order to obtain the OCN Community Interpreting L3(Open College Network) qualification.

    2-Is there an exam? No, there is no exam. You build a portfolio with assessments that you complete at home and during lesson times, the teacher marks them and at the end of the course, if all is achieved you will be ready to achieve your qualification.

    3-If I have past experience as an Interpreter or Translator, can I fast forward and complete Part 2 without completing part 1? No. all candidates must complete Part 1 (8 assessments) before completing Part 2 (7 assessments, 1 formally assessed role-play, 2 glossaries and 1 short translation into target language). It takes around 14 weeks to complete the community interpreting qualification at STC.

    4-Can I complete Preparing for Community Interpreting and Community Interpreting L3 at the same time? Unfortunately, no. the coursework is divided into 2 parts, you must successfully complete one part in order to progress to another.

    5-Which qualification do I get? 4 Units with London Open College Network L3 (OCN). There is a qualification fee Qualification fee of £60

    6-When I finish, where do I work? You work for private Agencies. Agencies will send you to work in Benefits, Health, Social Care, Immigration, Housing and Education cases. Tutors will provide with a list of London Interpreting Agencies. Currently, agencies only sign in Interpreters who hold a L3 qualification.

    7-What is the pay rate I will expect to earn? Pay rate goes from £ 12 to £25 p hour. You will work as a free- lancer the agencies call you when they need you.

    Please note that this course is delivered online . You'll be assessed through 8 written assignments and a final Progression Test. You need to complete these successfully to progress onto Community Interpreting Level 3-part 2. You will also need to be able to send the electronic assessments together to you tutor via email
