Digital Skills in Excel - Award in BTEC Pre-Vocational Study

This course offers a friendly and supportive environment for learners who have only a basic understanding of Microsoft Excel —such as knowing what a cell is.

It's also ideal for those who've used basic Excel in the past but would like a refresher to build confidence and strengthen their foundational digital skills. You'll be guided through the essentials in a clear and practical way.

Digital Skills: BTEC Award in Pre-Vocational (Pearsons) is a nationally recognised qualification designed to help learners develop essential digital skills for work and further study. This course introduces key concepts in digital communication, preparing learners for vocational pathways. Your tutor will provide a mini-booklet or resources with explanations and exercises for you to complete during class and take home for further practice.

Sessions will include a mix of computer-based tasks, theory, group discussions, and pair work.

  • Introductory Course Info HE


    This course introduces learners to the Microsoft Excel through a practical and creative project: building a personal budget sheet. Learners will explore how information is presented in documents, gather relevant data, and produce a simple digital document using Excel. The course is designed to build confidence with digital tools while developing essential life and employability skills.

  • Entry Requirements


    You will need basic experience of using a computer, for example logging on and saving files. You will also need a willingness to have a go.

  • Course Content


    • By the end of the course you'll be able to:
    • Explain the key features of Excel
    • Navigate your way around Excel
    • Use key terms e.g. ribbon, row, column, cell
    • Use correct data formats e.g. number, text, date, currency
    • Make clear and readable spreadsheets
    • Use formulae to produce a document
    • Solve practical problems with spreadsheets
    • Set learning targets Learners will receive a BTEC Award Pre-vocational qualification Certificate

    Stage 1: Introduction to Excel Navigating the Excel interface

    Stage 2: Producing a Basic Document Planning and designing a budget sheet Using formulas for calculations

  • Assessment Details


    Assessment is portfolio-based and includes:

    Completion of structured worksheets Tutor observation and witness statements A final budget sheet created in Excel Learner reflection and declaration of authenticity Learners are assessed against the following BTEC Unit criteria:

    A.P1: Identify ways information is presented in different types of documents A.P2: Identify information to use in an agreed document A.P3: Produce a basic document with support and guidance B.P1: Contribute to making a decision when agreeing targets B.P2: Solve basic problems, with support and guidance B.P3: Participate in working towards a given target by following a plan.

    All assessments are internally verified and feedback is provided in a timely and supportive manner.
