Stained and Fused Glass: Traditional and Contemporary Skills
Students of all levels are welcome. You will receive individual advice and guidance to complete a project of your choice appropriate to your level of experience.
Traditional techniques using lead, copper foil and glass applique are taught as well as contemporary warm glass techniques - painted, fused and slumped glass.
You will be able to create a wide variety of beautiful and decorative pieces using these techniques - tiny pieces of jewellery, coasters, bowls, light catchers, lanterns, mirrors and panels for doors, windows and the garden.
Students may achieve a skill set which will enable them to gift or sell their work as well as undertake commissioned work.
Working with glass in a group situation can be relaxing and sociable but also stimulates ideas and, for many, becomes a lifelong learning opportunity and an interest with commercial potential.

Course Content
By the end of the course you will be able to:- Cut glass into a variety of shapes
- Explore colour and light in order to create designs for glass projects
- Prepare working drawings and maquettes
- Cut and shape lead, apply copper foil and solder
- Prepare glass for fusing / slumping in the kiln
- Understand the processes required to complete projects to the highest possible standard
- Use materials, tools and equipment safely

Progression Next Steps
Progress onto higher-level courses, workshops, or qualifications to develop career or hobby skills further. Many students go on to make and sell pieces commercially. -
Additional Information
Some initial materials (glass) will be provided to enable students to get started on the course, from then on students will be expected to provide their own materials. The tutor will advise students on where to source materials. All tools will be provided.A small enrolment fee is charged to cover basic materials. However, materials required for individual projects will need to be purchased separately. Guidance on suitable suppliers and estimated costs will be provided during the project planning stage.
Some courses may be available at reduced fees for learners on low income or receiving benefits.

Teaching and Learning
Learning takes place through a mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and individual project work. You will have the opportunity to plan and create your own projects under the guidance of an experienced tutor. There will be time in each session for discussion, feedback, and developing your practical techniques.
