  • Entry Requirements


    This course is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some prior experience. A good understanding of English is necessary to engage fully with the course materials and instructions. Learners who are willing and able to explore shared online resources will gain the most from the course.

  • Course Content


    ART HISTORY: FROM PREHISTORY TO THE PRESENT IN 100 OBJECTS.

    This online lecture surveys the creation of artefacts and artworks, be they buildings, canvases, frescos or sculptures, looking at the way they are influenced by, as well as influencing their historical context. The lecture moves from prehistory to Ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, Pre-Columbian and Mesoamerican, through the Greek, Hellenic and Roman civilisations, to the Romanesque, Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque, and onto the Neoclassical, Romantic, Modernist and Postmodernist. It looks at one or more objects from each period, contextualising them with primary literature as well as historical events, and looking at the philosophical ideas behind the art-historical periods.

    Outcomes of the course:

    Demonstrate Historical Understanding identify and describe key artistic movements and styles from prehistory to the postmodern era, explaining how they emerged from and contributed to their respective historical contexts.
