Move with Confidence: Wheelchair-based Fitness for Adults 24+

This inclusive and supportive course is designed for adults aged 24+ who use a wheelchair and would like to improve their fitness, mobility, and overall wellbeing. Through a range of accessible exercises and movement activities, learners will develop strength, flexibility, coordination, and confidence in a welcoming environment. The course encourages participants to enjoy physical activity at their own pace while building confidence, independence, and social connections.

  • Entry Requirements


    There are no formal entry requirements for this course. It is open to adults aged 24+ who use a wheelchair and would like to improve their fitness, mobility, and wellbeing. Learners should be able to take part in gentle physical activity at a level that is appropriate for them.

  • Course Content


    By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

    Participate safely and confidently in wheelchair based fitness activities. Improve awareness of posture, movement, and body mechanics. Develop strength, flexibility, endurance, and coordination through regular exercise. Increase confidence in engaging in physical activity and movement. Recognise the benefits of exercise for physical and mental wellbeing. Set and work towards personal fitness and wellbeing goals. *Develop strategies for maintaining an active lifestyle.

  • Progression Next Steps


    On completion of this course, learners may wish to continue developing their fitness, confidence, and wellbeing by enrolling on WHRX050CL or WHRX051CL, which are delivered in Wandsworth during Terms 2 and 3. These courses provide opportunities to build on the skills and techniques learned while maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle in a supportive group setting.

  • Additional Information


    Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for exercise and bring a bottle of water to each session. All activities can be adapted to meet individual abilities, and learners are encouraged to work at a pace that is comfortable for them. The course is delivered in a supportive, inclusive environment where participation, enjoyment, and personal progress are encouraged.

  • Course Structure


    This six week course consists of one, 2.5 hour, session each week, combining gentle wheelchair based fitness activities with guided exercises, practical movement techniques, and group discussion. Each session builds on the previous one, allowing learners to progress at their own pace while developing strength, mobility, confidence, and strategies to support an active and healthy lifestyle in a supportive and inclusive environment.

  • Assessment Details


    Assessment is informal and ongoing throughout the course. The tutor will provide regular one to one feedback, observation, and encouragement to support each learner's progress. Learners will also have opportunities to reflect on their own development, review their personal goals, and celebrate their achievements in a supportive environment.

  • Teaching and Learning


    Teaching is practical, learner centred, and fully inclusive. Sessions include tutor demonstrations, guided wheelchair-based exercises, individual and group activities, and opportunities for discussion and reflection. Learners will receive encouragement and support to develop their skills and confidence at their own pace, with activities adapted to meet individual needs and abilities.
