The Pearson Level 3 Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) BTEC National in Health and Social Care (Extended Certificate) is designed for students who are interested in understanding how health and social care services support individuals across the lifespan.

This qualification combines academic study with practical, real-world scenarios to help students develop knowledge of health, wellbeing and care practices. It provides insight into the roles of professionals working in the health and social care sector and explores how services meet the needs of different individuals and communities.

  • Entry Requirements


    Typical entry requirements include:

    • 4 x GCSEs at grade 4 - 9, including English or a Level 2 Certificate or above in a relevant subject
    • A DBS check

    Students should have an interest in working with people, good communication skills, and a commitment to developing an understanding of health and wellbeing.

  • Course Content


    Students will study a range of topics related to health, wellbeing, and social care practice.

    Mandatory units include:

    • Human Lifespan and Development – understanding physical, intellectual, emotional and social development across different life stages
    • Human Biology and Health – exploring how body systems work and how biological factors affect health
    • Health and Social Care Practice – examining professional values, legislation, and the principles that underpin care services
    • Students will also study one optional unit

    These units explore areas such as public health policy, infection control, health promotion, and maintaining safe care environments.

  • Course Structure


    This course is studied over one academic year.

    The qualification consists of four units in total:

    • Three mandatory units
    • One optional unit

    Students will complete a mixture of examined units (x 2) and coursework-based units (x 2), allowing them to develop both academic knowledge and practical understanding of health and social care.

    The course involves classroom learning, research activities, case studies, and group discussions that explore real-life health and care scenarios.

  • Assessment Details


    Assessment is through a combination of examinations and coursework.

    Students will be assessed through:

    • External written examinations
    • Internally assessed coursework assignments set by Pearson
    • Case studies, reports, presentations, and applied tasks

    Two units are externally assessed by exam, while the remaining units are assessed through coursework projects that apply knowledge to real-life health and social care situations.

    Grades are awarded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction.
