Key Facts

L1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment and CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives (for CSCS Green Card)

This Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment qualification, along with the CITB Health, Safe and Environment test is for those wishing to apply for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme Green Card (CSCS Card), to access construction sites in the UK as a non-skilled worker.

CSCS introduced a requirement for applicants to achieve a formal knowledge based qualification, the Health and Safety in a Construction Environment' Award. Achievement of this award will demonstrate the applicant's understanding of key issues affecting safe working practices on UK construction sites.

South Thames College run regular Test Days, where you will receive training before taking two online exams to gain the qualifications necessary to apply for a CSCS card.

The training and the tests all take place in one day at our Wandsworth campus.

    It is expected that candidates will have revised for the tests before making an application.

  • Course Content


    The L1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment course contains five key areas of learning:

    • The principles of risk assessment for maintaining and improving health and safety at work
    • The importance of safe manual handling in the workplace
    • The importance of working safely at height in the workplace
    • The risks to health within a construction environment
    • The importance of working around plant and equipment safely

    The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives covers five core knowledge areas:

    • Working environment
    • Occupational health
    • Safety
    • High risk activities
    • Specialist

    Our Test Days for 2025 are below. After your application you will be given the date of a Test Day where there is an available space.

  • Course Structure


    The Test Day Schedule is:

    1.15pm: Training- City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment

    2.15pm: BREAK

    2.30pm: Online Test- City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment

    3.40pm BREAK

    3.50pm: Online Test- CITB Health, Safety & Environment Operatives

    4.35pm END

  • Assessment Details


    The L1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment The pass mark is 80%. The duration of the online test is 70 minutes. The assessment will contain: 11 questions on 'The principles of risk assessment for maintaining and improving health and safety at work' 8 questions on 'The importance of safe manual handling in the workplace' 9 questions on 'The importance of working safely at height in the workplace' 12 questions on 'The risks to health within a construction environment' 5 questions on 'The importance of working around plant and equipment safely'

    The CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives The pass mark is 90%. The duration of the online test is 45 minutes. There will be 50 questions in the test

    Candidates will receive their result on the day they take the assessment.
