Key Facts

Building Services Engineering Technician Apprenticeship - Level 3

A building services design technician helps engineers and other construction professionals in the development of cost effective technical and sustainable design solutions. This involves the production of three-dimensional models, calculations, specifications, reports, and drawings. Their work includes systems such as renewable technologies, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, drainage, lighting, power, controls, and lifts. A design technician could be employed within a

design consultancy, a contractor or a manufacturing company

As part of the Apprenticeship programme, learners will also complete the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services Engineering) qualification.

The Apprentice will all complete an online portfolio of evidence which will be supervised by in-company mentors and LCB assessors.

Completion of the Apprenticeship will be confirmed following the satisfactory conclusion of an End Point Assessment.

  • Entry Requirements

Applicants must have achieved minimum GCSE Maths and English at Grade 5 or B. In addition, all prospective apprentices are required to complete an initial assessment in Maths and English before their place on the programme can be confirmed.

The Maths assessment covers key GCSE-level topics, including:

Geometry and Measurement: area and perimeter, circles and sectors, Pythagoras' theorem, and trigonometry.

*Algebra: solving simultaneous equations using the elimination method, rearranging formulae, and solving quadratic equations.

    • Statistics: grouped data, modal and median classes, calculating the median, and estimating the mean.

    The English assessment focuses on:

    *Paraphrasing and summarising information.

*Comparing different pieces of written material.

*Justifying ideas and opinions with clear reasoning.

*Writing a clear and purposeful statement.

  • Course Content

As part of the programme, learners will engage is study of a number of modules:

    • Construction Principles (Externally examined)

    • Construction Design (Externally Examined)

    • Construction Technology

    • Health & Safety

    • Provision of Primary Services

    • Building Services Science

    • Use of Static and Dynamic Fluids in Building Services

    • Graphical Detailing for Construction

    • Further Mathematics for Construction

    • Management of a Construction Project

Apprentices will develop the necessary Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours to be a competent Civil Engineer as outlined by CIBSE, to name a few:

    -Knowledge:

K1: Appropriate engineering principles, underpinned by relevant mathematical, scientific, and technical knowledge and understanding, relating to building services engineering (BSE)

K2: Appropriate BSE techniques and methods used to design, install, commission, maintain or operate buildings and infrastructure

K3: Key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis and evaluation used in delivering BSE models

    *Skills:

S1: Apply appropriate BSE principles, techniques, and methods, including mathematical, scientific, and technical know-how

S2: Apply key principles, techniques and methods of data and technical information collection, analysis and evaluation to support the delivery of BSE models

S3: Operate computer-based software packages, such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or modelling software (Revit)

    *Behaviour:

B1: Complies with health, safety and welfare requirements, industry standards, statutory regulation and legislation, policies, and codes of practice

B2: Works independently, operating in a systematic, proactive, and transparent way, using resources effectively to complete tasks, knowing their limitations and when to ask for support or escalate

B3: Applies a structured approach to problem solving with attention to detail, accuracy, and diligence

  • Progression Next Steps

Once an apprentice has successfully completed this course, they will qualify for registration as an engineering technician

by the relevant professional engineering institution.

  • Course Structure

Apprentices complete 4 days in the workplace, and 1 day at College.

  • Assessment Details

As part of the college enrolment process all Apprentices will undertake a maths and science assessment.

As part of the Apprenticeship programme, learners will also complete the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services Engineering) qualification.

They will also be required to produce an on-going evidence log of off-the-job training, relevant to they programme.

In order to complete the Apprenticeship, learners are required to complete an End-Point Assessment (EPA).
