L2 Preparing for Community Interpreting (ILP 21-44 hrs)

Please note that this course is delivered online via Zoom.

Complete this course to gain the qualification you need to become a community interpreter. This OCN qualification is recognised by many public services and you could use it to go on to work in areas such as Health, Education, Benefits, Housing & Immigration. You should have completed and achieved an assessment (getting into Community Interpreting with STC before enrolling on this course)

You will have a much better understanding of the role of a community interpreter. You will make significant contributions to the final portfolio you will need to submit to earn your certificate.

Interpreting courses are accredited, it is not possible to simply enrol on the course. you must have successfully completed an assessment (getting into Community Interpreting with STC before enrolling on this course)

  • Entry Requirements


    You must be 19 or over Be able to use the 4 skills fluently English Entry L3 or above Be able to read, write and speak fluently in your community language - most students are native speakers of this. The community languages accepted to study the course with us are: Arabic; Bengali; Bulgarian; Farsi; French; Greek; Hindi; Hungarian, Italian; Japanese; Mandarin; Nepalese, Polish; Portuguese; Russian; Spanish; Tamil, Tigrinya, Turkish; Urdu; Romanian; Somali, Vietnamese Be able to use WORD to write your assessments Be able to send an email with a WORD attachment Be able to use Zoom to attend the Part1/Part2 courses

  • Course Content


    During this course you will learn:

    • Specialist terminology used in the public services
    • Independent research into the public service and health care issues within the communities
    • Your confidentiality and impartiality responsibilities
    • Role-plays to practise and strengthen your skills
    • How to make basic interventions when interpreting
  • Course Structure


    10 to 14.30 online sessions x 6 weeks

  • Assessment Details


    Please note that this course is delivered online. You'll be assessed through eight written assignments and a final role play to complete a portfolio of evidence. You will also need to be able to collate your portfolio using PDF and send it to your tutor via email. Please note you need to be able to write in your mother tongue as the Glossaries are from English into your mother tongue.
