Complete this course to gain 4 units that you need to become a community interpreter. These OCN units are recognised by Interpreting Agencies and you could use it to go on to work in areas such as Health, Education, Benefits, Housing & Immigration. You will have a much better understanding of the role of a community interpreter. Interpreting courses are accredited, it is not possible to simply enrol on the course. You must have proof that you have successfully completed Preparing for Community Interpreting before enrolling in this Community Interpreting L3 course.

  • Entry Requirements


    You must be 19 or over English Entry L3 or above Be able to use WORD to write your assessments. Be able to send an email with a WORD attachment. Computer literate. Have successfully completed Preparing for Community Interpreting You cannot enrol directly on this course. you need to complete first Preparing for Community Interpreting.

    During this course you will learn:

    • Specialist terminology used in the public services.
    • Independent research into the public service and health care issues within the communities.
    • Your confidentiality and impartiality responsibilities.
    • Role-plays to practise and strengthen your skills.
    • How to make appropriate interventions when interpreting.

    This course will give you 4 recognised units you can use to go into work. If you want to work towards another specialist qualification, there are other higher qualifications, for example: the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI).

  • Additional Information


    Community Interpreting Level 3 1-How do I get the qualification? You have to complete first the Preparing for Community Interpreting course and then progress onto the Community Interpreting L3 course in order to obtain the 4 OCN community Interpreting units.

    2-Is there an exam? No, there is no exam. You build a portfolio with assessments that you complete at home and during lesson times, the teacher marks them and at the end of the course, if all is achieved you will be ready to achieve your qualification.

    3-If I have past experience as an Interpreter or Translator, can I fast forward to Community Interpreting L3? No. all candidates must complete Preparing for Community Interpreting before completing Community Interpreting L3. It takes around 12 weeks to complete the community interpreting evidence.

    4-Which qualification do I get? You will obtain 4 units with the London Open College Network L3 (OCN). There is a qualification fee Qualification fee of £65 that you pay at beginning of Community Interpreting L3.

    6-When I finish, where do I work? You work for private Agencies. Agencies will send you to work in Benefits, Health, Social Care, Immigration, Housing and Education cases. Tutors will provide with a list of London Interpreting Agencies. Currently, agencies only sign in Interpreters who hold a L3 qualification.

    7-What is the pay rate I will expect to earn? Pay rate goes from £ 12 to £25 p hour. You will work as a free- lancer the agencies call you when they need you.

  • Course Structure


    Please note that this course is delivered online. 6 sessions of 4 hours. Times : 10 to 14.:30. you will be expected to complete 1 or 2 written assessments per week outside of the teaching hours.

  • Assessment Details


    Please note that this course is delivered online. You'll be assessed through eight written assignments and a final role play to complete a portfolio of evidence. You will also need to be able to collate your portfolio using PDF and send it to your tutor via email. Please note you need to be able to write in your mother tongue to complete some translation assignments.
