Community Interpreting - Level 3: Part 1
Please note that this course is delivered online via Zoom.
Complete this course to gain the qualification you need to become a community interpreter. This OCN qualification is recognised by many public services and you could use it to go on to work in areas such as Health, Education, Benefits, Housing & Immigration. You should have completed and achieved an assessment (getting into Community Interpreting with STC before enrolling on this course)
You will have a much better understanding of the role of a community interpreter. You will make significant contributions to the final portfolio you will need to submit to earn your certificate.
Interpreting courses are accredited, it is not possible to simply enrol on the course. you must have successfully completed an assessment (getting into Community Interpreting with STC before enrolling on this course)

Entry Requirements
You must be 18 or over Be able to use the 4 skills fluently English Entry L3 or above Be able to read, write and speak fluently in your community language - most students are native speakers of this. The community languages accepted to study the course with us are: Arabic; Bengali; Bosnian, Bulgarian; Farsi; French; Greek; Hindi; Italian; Japanese; Korean; Mandarin; Nepalese, Polish; Portuguese; Russian; Spanish; Singhalese, Tigrinya, Tamil, Turkish; Urdu; Romanian; Serbian, Somali, Vietnamese Be able to use WORD to write your assessments. Be able to send an email with a WORD attachment. Have successfully completed an assessment session ( getting into Community Interpreting) You cannot enrol directly on this course, the tutor will start the enrolment and you have to complete it -
Course Content
During this course you will learn:

- Independent research into the public service and health care issues within the communities
- Your confidentiality and impartiality responsibilities
- Role-plays to practise and strengthen your skills
- How to make basic interventions when interpreting

Progression Next Steps
This course will give you a recognised qualification you can use to go into work. If you want to work towards another specialist qualification, there are other higher qualifications, for example: the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) -

Community Interpreting Level 3 1-How do I get the qualification? You have to complete both the Community Interpreting Part 1 and part 2 in order to obtain the OCN Community Interpreting L3(Open College Network) qualification.2-Is there an exam? No, there is no exam. You build a portfolio with assessments that you complete at home and during lesson times, the teacher marks them and at the end of the course, if all is achieved you will be ready to achieve your qualification.
3-If I have past experience as an Interpreter or Translator, can I fast forward and complete Part 2 without completing part 1? No. all candidates must complete Part 1 (8 assessments) before completing Part 2 (7 assessments, 1 formally assessed role-play, 2 glossaries and 1 short translation into target language). It takes around 14 weeks to complete the community interpreting qualification at STC.
4-Can I complete part 1 and Part 2 at the same time? Unfortunately, no. the coursework is divided into 2 parts, you must successfully complete Part 1 in order to Progress to Part2. Part 1 courses are 6 weeks during the day and 8 weeks for evening courses. Part 2 courses are 8 weeks during the day and 9-10 weeks during the evening
5-Which qualification do I get? London Open College Network L3 (OCN). There is a qualification fee Qualification fee of £100 that you pay at beginning of part 2
6-When I finish, where do I work? You work for private Agencies. Agencies will send you to work in Benefits, Health, Social Care, Immigration, Housing and Education cases. Tutors will provide with a list of London Interpreting Agencies. Currently, agencies only sign in Interpreters who hold a L3 qualification.
7-What is the pay rate I will expect to earn? Pay rate goes from £ 12 to £25 p hour. You will work as a free- lancer the agencies call you when they need you.

Assessment Details
Please note that this course is delivered online. You'll be assessed through eight written assignments and a final role play to complete a portfolio of evidence. You will also need to be able to collate your portfolio using PDF and send it to your tutor via email. Please note you need to be able to write in your mother tongue as the Glossaries are from English into your mother tongue.
