Reconstruction & Upcycling: Designing with Discarded Textiles

Learn the principles of working sustainably with textiles by discovering new uses for discarded or fragile fabrics. In this 5 week course you will learn various techniques to create a new product from fabric scraps.

This course will teach you skills for working with textiles in a sustainable way. You will learn various mending techniques, making your own fabric trims, quilting, applique and patchwork to give a new lease of life to fabrics that might otherwise be unusable.

  • Entry Requirements


    This is a non-accredited course, designed to help you develop practical and creative skills in a relaxed and friendly environment.

    Basic materials and tools will be available and further details will be provided at the first session.

    Please bring a notebook or sketchbook to record patterns, samples, and design ideas.

    If you are on a low wage, unemployed or claim Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) then you can have a reduction.

  • Course Content


    Understand the principles of sustainable textile practice and the environmental benefits of reconstruction and upcycling. Assess and select discarded or unwanted textiles for creative reuse. Apply a range of hand and machine mending techniques to repair and extend the life of fabrics and garments. Create decorative and functional textile embellishments, including handmade trims and surface details. Use quilting, appliqué, and patchwork techniques to transform and combine reclaimed materials. Develop creative design ideas that respond to the qualities and limitations of recycled textiles. *Plan and complete individual upcycling projects using sustainable methods and materials.

  • Additional Information


    The tutor: Bonita Ahuja studied textile design at UAL Chelsea College of Art, graduating with a First Class Honours. She has been working as a professional textile artist/ designer since 2004, specialising in hand woven and hand embroidered fabrics.

    Alongside running her own textile practice, Bonita has been teaching creative embroidery and textile related courses for over 14 years. Her teaching style marries contemporary design with ancient textile traditions, laying emphasis on creativity, learning through experimentation and development of individual style.

  • Course Structure


    This course runs over 5 weeks, with sessions held once per week. It is designed for learners to progress from design planning and technical understanding to creating a finished project. Each week combines demonstrations, guided practice, and independent work.

  • Assessment Details


    Learner progress will be assessed through a combination of:

    *Tutor Feedback: Ongoing guidance and constructive feedback during class activities, swatch creation, and project work.

    *Homework/Independent Practice: Tasks to reinforce skills learned in class, including swatches, drafting, and small practice projects.

    *Learner Self-Assessment: Reflection on personal progress, evaluation of completed work, and identification of areas for improvement to support independent learning.

    *This approach ensures learners receive continuous support, develop self-awareness of their skills, and are able to apply techniques confidently in their final projects.

  • Teaching and Learning


    Learning takes place through a mix of demonstrations, guided practice, and individual project work. You will have the opportunity to plan and create your own projects under the guidance of an experienced tutor. There will be time in each session for discussion, feedback, and developing your practical techniques.
