On Tuesday April 26, 2022 South Thames College hosted, 'A Focus on Women in Construction and the Built Environment Networking lunch.' The event was aimed at women aspiring to enter the industry and those currently in the industry aspiring to go higher.
The new Principal, John O'Shea gave a welcome message and Stella Raphael-Reeves Vice Principal spoke about the importance of the industry and where South Thames College are heading.
The event showcased the following speakers, starting with Mary Amir a property developer; who highlighted the ratio of women to men in the industry, and how hard it is for women in the industry and the long hours she has to work.
Jathusa Yogarasa, a graduate civil engineer from Graham Construction, was clad in her fluorescent orange uniform and spoke about her journey and current projects she is working on.
Sophie Drury from the Mace Group is a construction manager spoke about starting off in an administration role and now she is responsible for moving cranes and managing projects. She highlighted each aspect of her journey and some of things that are involved, such as having to rescue someone from a crane.
Katie Howard, a graduate civil engineer from Mott MacDonald, spoke about her journey and how she is currently preparing for her chartership.
Sacha Murmann, Head of Vocational and Technical Study School at South Thames College, introduced the courses run at the college.
There was a general buzz and everyone networked, there has been interest generated for carpentry apprenticeships, and expressions of interest for the HNC Level 4 Construction and the Built Environment delivered at South Thames College and interest for the Higher Technical Qualifications which will be delivered at South Thames College in 2023.
