South Thames College were delighted to host the launch of the amazing Be Enriched food bus led by Sadiq Khan, with the help of two local MPs supported by South Thames College students. The Food Bus supports families in need, with access to nutritious affordable food.
Peter Mayhew- Smith, CEO, South Thames Colleges Group commented, "Our students welcomed the Wandsworth Food Bus to South Thames College and shared their amazing ideas with Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, who launched the project. We were so proud they chose South Thames College as the first stop on this important journey, getting food and warmth to the disadvantaged in our community. A truly wonderful piece of work."
Kemi Akinola, Founder of Be Enirched, the charity that led on the Food Bus initiative commented, "The Food bus was created because we were concerned about food deserts and swamps across Wandsworth. These are areas where there are no fresh food shops or areas swamped with fast food establishments. People who live in these areas find it harder to eat healthier because of these limited options. We hope the bus will support a healthier lifestyle and bring the community together. Be Enriched would love to hear from any students with a community event that they would like to run from the bus as everyone is welcome on board."
Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, commented "I’m committed to reducing food inequality in London. That’s why I’ve invested in the Wandsworth Food Bus, the bus will bring affordable, high-quality food to underserved areas in Wandsworth and Lambeth. As well as tackling food inequality, the bus will offer community members advice on issues like benefits, debt, budgeting, mental health and addiction. Projects like this show what’s possible when partners work together to address the most urgent issues in our society.”
