MOBO nominated music artist, creative director and mixed media visual artist Kojey Radical visited our students at the Creative Industries Centre this week to give a talk about mental health and race issues within the music industry. After the talk Kojey signed pictures followed by a tour of the Creative Industries Centre viewing our various art suites and studios and meeting and greeting students. Lucky students in one of the music studios at the time who were producing and recording songs had a surprise visit from Kojey who sat, listened and gave them some valuable advice. Kojey was also kind enough to give our students 50% off to his gig on the 5th March at Pryzm in Kingston.
Brian Eke, Music Performance Year 2 student, said: “Meeting one of your idols, someone’s music you've listened to for so long, was surreal, it almost felt nostalgic, and then getting feedback from Kojey after he had listened to my track was really special. The talk was so relevant and very beneficial for people who are unsure on how to market themselves, construct songs and the different skills needed to make it in the industry.”
Malakai Matthews, Music Production Year 2 student, said: “Giving out pointers on how to survive in the industry was useful, not just for music students, but all creative arts students.”
Jamie Winks, Music Performance Year 2, student added: “It confirmed a lot of things I was thinking about going into the music industry, Kojey's talk made me feel a lot more confident about becoming a musician.”
Collectively the Music students said they found it really interesting to learn about Kojey’s background and then his journey into industry, how he has linked up so many creative areas including poetry, graphic design and music. Very inspiring!
