Amanda Sutton is one of our Adult Education students studying Pottery at Merton. Here, she tells us about her experience taking the course.
Amanda says: "I had always been interested in making my own pots, so I decided to enrol on a pottery course at Merton. The class is great for beginners and experienced potters alike. My tutor Karen has been inspirational in taking me through the basic steps of working with clay, but also covering a much broader range of techniques than I expected.
As a beginner I’ve been able to learn from others doing different levels of work, which I’ve found to be very encouraging. We’ve undertaken large and small projects of all shapes, sizes, finishes and colours. Karen has guided me through, explaining why some of my ideas might not work whilst others will. She has provided us with information on famous potters, local fairs and exhibitions, as well as more technical detail on how clays and glazes works at different temperatures.
Most importantly, I’ve been encouraged to explore the subject more widely than I might have done, through example but mostly by practical work. In just one term I have made and glazed a textured box, several jugs, a serving plate and a butter dish!
I cannot recommend this pottery class enough and have thoroughly enjoyed learning a new skill.”
