A group of our Level 3 Engineering students undertook a week of valuable work experience at National Grid during their summer holidays.
The students started the placement by reviewing a project plan and going through how the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) worked. They were given the opportunity to carry out training on a Dagger device, which displays the supply of oxygen that engineers take with them when entering a tunnel.
Engineering student Gobikrishna Thiyagarasa said:"We had to complete a Risk Assessment form and it was then explained to us how a tunnel is built and the wire going through it. After receiving our PPE, we went into the tunnel through the tunnel shaft, which was 10 metres in diameter and 35 metres deep. The tunnel itself was 3 metres in diameter.
We took some photos inside the tunnel and then completed a site visit form to check whether there were any hazards or spills on site. This week has been a fantastic experience for us to learn more about engineering on site."
