The Committee of South London Principals (COSLP) held their anuual Best Learner Awards on Thursday 19 May after a break of three long years to celebrate their very best learners and amazing teachers.
Student winner: Haider Butt
Haider Butt is a successful ICT student, who has overcome challenges and is set to achieve his Level 3 diploma this summer.
Haider moved to the UK from Pakistan in 2018, with English as a second language. He has muscular dystrophy and is reliant on a wheelchair to move around – as well as hearing loss which impacts the way he can access his learning.
Yet despite these challenges. Haider has been committed to achieving well and focusing on his goal of eventually attending University. This year he has progressed onto a Level 3 BTEC ICT course, alongside taking his Maths GCSE.
Haider is considering higher education options for next year – and we have no doubt he will achieve all his ambitions. A very worthy winner of this award.
Staff winner: Evgenia Rosato:
Evgeina started working with Haider in September 2020 and what a journey it has been!
With Evgenia’s encouragement, Haider has adopted a more independent approach with his learning. Her dedicated support and determination has helped improve Haider’s mental wellbeing. Now he is “the star of the show” everywhere he goes, he has lots of friends and, as he says himself, he “enjoys life” at Merton College.
Evgenia, is an excellent role model. She is devoted, positive and patient. Gentle in her approach with our young people, nudging learners to do their best, with sensitivity and insight. Well done Evgenia!
