Safeguarding

Samuel Kalu, former Motor Vehicle student said: “I officially became a British citizen on 26 February after my citizenship ceremony.

I am over the moon, but you guys made it possible, so I am using this opportunity to say thank you for giving me the chance to be a member of your community which is now mine too. I don’t think words will ever be enough for me to show my appreciation for the time I spent at Carshalton College.  “A big thank you for all your love and support towards me. It has been an honour to know you all. I am forever in your debt.

I started my studies at Carshalton College at entry level on a Motor Vehicle course as I had no GCSEs. I had a family member who had attended the College before me who recommended I apply.

I have always liked cars and was more interested in getting them up and running, I was also intrigued on finding out how they operate. Plus, as they say, transportation does make the world go around! I enjoyed the practical part of my course the most as I had the opportunity to work on several different vehicles.  My tutors Steve and Clive’s lessons were great as they both had a deep understanding about motor vehicle parts, operation and the industry as a whole.

One of my proudest moments was when I scored 100% in an exam, I wasn’t sure if I was going to even pass as I had been experiencing some personal problems. But I made it!

The teaching and tutors were amazing, I always received help when I needed. They were always willing to explain more and help me to understand. I am so grateful for the level of support I received.

I was an active member of the student union for three years. After the first year I became the student union president where I was able to work closely with the Student Support team on improving students’ timekeeping, plus many other issues. During my last year I was part of the student ambassador programme where I helped to organise the Christmas party and setting up the common room facilities.   I was honoured to work with all the Student Support team who made my life as a student so enjoyable and stress free.

After my Level 2, I progressed onto Level 3 where I decided to join an apprenticeship scheme and started working at a garage in croydon. My work experience was a key factor to where I am right now.  It allowed me to understand how the automobile industry operates, I worked on a wide range of vehicles and I was also exposed to day to day car faults and major issues too. It helped me to understand my theory classes a lot better.

I wasn’t happy about finally leaving the College after my studies as it felt like my second home.

After my Apprenticeship I joined McLaren supercar industry for 5yrs where I was part of a six-man team who worked on the McLaren 570GT which was unveiled at the New York International Auto show.  I also worked on the 720, 675LT, of which only 500 were produced. Also worked on the Senna P15. I am just waiting on my contract for Bentley. Hopefully that will be my next chapter.

I believe I will have my own business and be able to contribute to the community and help change things around me. And to help others in whichever way I can.

I understand that being a student is very hard sometimes, but I want you to know - the endgame is so worth it! Once you have achieved at College, the world is yours, if you are willing to invest the time and effort while you are at College. Make use of the support available for you, ask questions if you are in doubt, and please don’t think you are studying for just anyone. Do it for yourself and your own future.”

Lisa Jones, Head of Student Support said:  we are so very proud of Samuel, his dedication and hard work over the years has really paid off!  He has really managed to overcome any barriers and move forward despite how hard the journey has been for him. We are so pleased with all his successes and wish him many more for the future.”
