L3 - BTEC National Foundation Diploma in Music - Production & Technology

Interested in the technology behind live shows, recording sessions, and music production? This course develops your skills across three main areas: live sound engineering, studio recording, and music sequencing and production, alongside exploring the music industry.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

    An audition or recorded example of a performance to demonstrate that you have the appropriate level of skill required to succeed on the course. We love to see your creativity!

    As this is a performance-related practical music course, you will be required to supply your own instrument.

    4 x GCSE's at C/4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate / Extended Certificate or above (at merit or above) in a relevant subject.

    You will have gained either English and/or maths at GCSE C/4 or above, or L2 Functional skills in English and/or maths.

  • Course Content


    Learning is practical and industry-focused. You'll plan, set up, and run events, produce original music, and engineer professional studio sessions.

    During the year, you'll complete projects including: Recording a band in a studio environment Creating fully realised compositions and productions Planning, setting up, and mixing a live sound event

    You'll train in specialist mixing suites for editing and post-production, industry-standard rehearsal and live rooms, and two professional recording studios with Audient consoles. You'll also use the ACT Theatre for live sound setups and our dedicated Apple Mac suites packed with audio software. Core software includes Logic Pro and Pro Tools.

  • Progression Next Steps


    On completion of year 1 most students choose to continue onto the Extended Diploma. Graduates can expect to progress to a wide range of respected universities and specialist music schools, or into employment in live sound, studio engineering, or production roles.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.
