BTEC Level 3 in Music

Love performing live and creating your own music? This course builds your skills as a contemporary musician, developing your performance, composition, and industry knowledge. You'll perform in bands, create music in Logic Pro, explore different genres, and understand how the music industry works.

  • Entry Requirements


    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and / or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other this will include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference / school report.

    An audition or recorded example of a performance to demonstrate that you have the appropriate level of skill required to succeed on the course. We love to see your creativity!

    As this is a performance-related practical music course, you will be required to supply your own instrument.

    4 x GCSE's at C/4 or above, or a Level 2 Certificate / Extended Certificate or above (at merit or above) in a relevant subject.

    You will have gained either English and/or maths at GCSE C/4 or above, or L2 Functional skills in English and/or maths.

  • Course Content


    Learning is hands-on and project-based. You'll research artists and genres, rehearse and refine performances, develop technical skills in our studios, and learn how to promote yourself and your work professionally.

    During the year, you'll complete projects such as: Performing at multiple gigs throughout the year Creating music for screen and multimedia Predicting future trends in the music industry

    You'll work in industry-standard rehearsal spaces, acoustically treated mixing suites, and two fully equipped recording studios featuring Audient consoles. You'll also have access to our dedicated Apple Mac suites, a huge range of professional instruments and microphones, and the fully equipped ACT Theatre for larger performances and showcases. Core software includes Logic Pro and Pro Tools.

  • Progression Next Steps


    On completion of year 1 most learners progress onto the Extended Diploma. Graduates can expected to progress to a wide range of respected universities and specialist music schools, or go directly into industry roles as performers, writers, or session musicians.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

    Assessment is through coursework, including performances, rehearsal technique, compositions, and research.
