Level 3 Certificate in Hair Services (16-18 years)

This course aims to provide learners with a range of specialist practical skills and technical knowledge required to gain employment as a stylist within the hairdressing/barbering industry or progress onto further training. Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you have the skills and knowledge of health and safety and customer service, as well as practical skills such as advanced cutting and colouring.

  • Entry Requirements


    You will have gained either English and/or maths at GCSE 4 or above, or L2 Functional skills English and/or maths, and a Level 2 qualification in barbering and/or hairdressing at Merit level.

    Learners must have achieved Level 1 Numeracy and L2 English.

    We will invite you to a Meet the Tutor event where you will receive information, advice, and guidance about the course you have applied for. This will be an opportunity for you to gain valuable information about the course and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

    You will provide a copy of your last school report and/or a reference from an employer or relevant professional other to include attendance. This is to ensure we can support to be able to achieve well on the course. Applicants with 85% or below attendance will have been deemed not to have met this criteria. All applicants are given an opportunity to discuss any evidence based mitigating circumstances that may have affected the reference/school report.

  • Course Content


    This qualification covers a very wide range of skills and knowledge required for employment as a senior stylist. Mandatory and optional units include:

    • Monitor & maintain Health & Safety practice in the salon
    • Consultation support for colleagues on hair services
    • Cut women's hair to create a variety of looks
    • and dress hair using a variety of techniques
    • Bridal Hair
    • Colour hair to create a variety of looks
    • Promote and sell products and services to clients
  • Progression Next Steps


    Learners can progress into employment in a senior stylist role or go onto further training on a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Hair and Beauty Management.

    There are lots of opportunities available to you to progress across the South Thames Colleges Group and into the world beyond education.

  • Additional Information


    September start. One year course with attendance 2-3 days a week at College (this could include evenings).

    To ensure students develop the professional standards and industry-ready skills required for employment, work experience in a commercial salon or barbershop is a mandatory component of all Hairdressing and Barbering courses.

    Students progressing to the next level must have secured and actively engaged in relevant work experience. This is a non-negotiable requirement for successful course completion and progression.

    Work experience provides essential real-world exposure, enabling students to apply practical skills, build client confidence, and understand industry expectations. Students are expected to secure a placement, attend consistently, demonstrate professional conduct, and reflect on their development.

    Support will be provided by the college to help students secure appropriate placements.
