Pottery - Glazing Session

This half day glazing workshop offers the opportunity to complete your bisque fired ceramic work in a supportive studio environment. The session is designed to balance technical skill building with creative exploration, making it suitable for both beginners and returning learners. Participants will work with a range of glazes and surface treatments, gaining confidence in the glazing process while developing a visual language.

  • Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to this course, however some experience in ceramics is recommended. Students must supply their own bisque fired ceramics to participate in this workshop.

  • Course Content

Bring your ceramic work to life in this focused half day glazing session. Designed for learners working at any stage of their ceramic journey, this workshop provides structured tutor guidance within a fully equipped ceramics studio, allowing students to complete their pieces with confidence. Students will glaze ceramic pieces that have been produced and bisque‑fired in our facilities, using a curated range of high quality studio glazes, including brush‑on, dipping, and pouring options.

If you wish to bring external bisque work, please contact Lauren.Mason@stcg.ac.uk before enrolling. A photograph, clay body details, and approximate dimensions will be required so we can confirm suitability for our firing processes. Students may also bring their own glazes, but these must be approved in advance to ensure compatibility with our kilns and clarity around intended use.

Who the Course Is For This course is suitable for all skill levels, from complete beginners to experienced makers refining their glazing approach.

Beginners in glazing will be introduced to essential principles, including glaze behaviour, safe and accurate mixing of powdered glazes, and core application techniques.

Experienced learners and experimenters will receive support in exploring a range of surface‑development methods, such as: layering pre mixed brush on glazes combining dipped and poured glazes applying oxides, stains, and underglaze details developing intentional decorative surface effects and colour interactions with support to select an approach suited to their work

Advanced or experimental approaches are offered on request, enabling students to tailor the session to their individual creative aims.

At the end of the workshop, all glazed work will remain with us for kiln firing and collection will be arranged once pieces are completed. Please note that results will vary depending on the piece, clay type, glaze choice and application method selected.

  • Progression Next Steps

Why not try one of our Tuesday evening Pottery: Discovery sessions, where intermediate ceramists can work on their own projects in our ceramics studio alongside an expert tutor to troubleshoot their making.
